Tracheostomy
About Lesson

It is an artificially moisture supplement which assist normal function and facilitate secretion removal. Failure to adequately humidify could result in tube or stoma blockage as secretions become dry and viscous, forming a crust around the tracheostomy.

The upper respiratory track (URT): Normally, the nose and upper airways humidify and warm inhaled air. With a tracheostomy, these structures are bypassed leading to dry, cold air entering the trachea, increasing the risk of mucus build-up, thicker secretions, increase risk of chest infection and airway complications. Such as: Dry sinuses, bloody noses (Nosebleed) and cracked lips.

Humidification should be considered over a 24-hour period much like positioning or nutrition.
