We must always use a non-fenestrated inner cannula for suctioning with either an “aseptic” or a “clean” technique procedure depending on your organisation policy.

However, if the patient has a subglottic port, it needs to be aspirated on a regular basis to assess subglottic load which can guide readiness to wean patient.

General rule: Use Non-fenestrated tube

Suction catheter size (Trach size x2-2)

• Size 8 tube = Size 14 catheter
• Size 7 tube = Size 12 catheter
• Size 6 tube = Size 10 catheter
