Tracheostomy
About Lesson

Single lumen tube has only an outer cannula, without an inner cannula

  • With or without a balloon cuff at the end of the tracheostomy
  • Typically used with the paediatric population
  • Very uncommon in the adult patients

Cuffed Tracheostomy A low volume, high pressure tracheostomy cuff has the following functions:

  • Minimises aspiration of oral/gastric contents
  • Maintains an effective seal for ventilation
  • Can aid in tracheostomy positioning

The cuff pressure should be checked at least 2-3 hourly using a Manometer. Pressure should be kept within the green pressure zone. To inflate the cuff or add pressure a 10ml syringe must be used.

Uncuffed Tracheostomy Tube(No Balloon) Cuffless tracheostomy tubes directives of usage:

  • Never used at first insertion, except for few rare cases usually ENT cases
  • It is used when tracheostomy patients are about to be weaned
  • For patients who talk removal of balloon, allow airflow to upper airway
  • Beneficial for patients with no issues of upper respiratory tract secretions or aspiration
