About Lesson
Single lumen tube has only an outer cannula, without an inner cannula
- With or without a balloon cuff at the end of the tracheostomy
- Typically used with the paediatric population
- Very uncommon in the adult patients
Cuffed Tracheostomy A low volume, high pressure tracheostomy cuff has the following functions:
- Minimises aspiration of oral/gastric contents
- Maintains an effective seal for ventilation
- Can aid in tracheostomy positioning
The cuff pressure should be checked at least 2-3 hourly using a Manometer. Pressure should be kept within the green pressure zone. To inflate the cuff or add pressure a 10ml syringe must be used.
Uncuffed Tracheostomy Tube(No Balloon) Cuffless tracheostomy tubes directives of usage:
- Never used at first insertion, except for few rare cases usually ENT cases
- It is used when tracheostomy patients are about to be weaned
- For patients who talk removal of balloon, allow airflow to upper airway
- Beneficial for patients with no issues of upper respiratory tract secretions or aspiration
